Birmingham’s Sita Rama Kalyanam 2026 – A Divine Celebration Rooted in Ancient Tradition

On Sunday, 28 June, the Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Hall was transformed into a sacred space reminiscent of Ayodhya as hundreds of devotees gathered for the first Birmingham Sita Rama Kalyanam. What unfolded was not only a cultural celebration, but a deeply spiritual experience that left a lasting impression on everyone present.

The ceremony was conducted according to the Bhagavatha Sampradaya, a sacred devotional tradition that has been preserved and passed down for over a thousand years. Rooted in Vedic ritual, devotional storytelling, congregational chanting and music, this living tradition allows devotees not just to witness the divine wedding of Lord Sri Rama and Mother Sita, but to participate in it through collective bhakti.

A particularly special feature of the programme was the involvement of children at the very beginning of the event. The day commenced with a Ganesh Pooja led for the children, allowing the youngest members of the community to be actively engaged from the outset. This meaningful inclusion ensured that the spiritual journey of the day began with the next generation at its heart, fostering early connection with tradition, prayer and community participation.

Equally significant was the remarkable contribution of community volunteers, many of whom stepped forward to serve in roles that went beyond logistics. Several volunteers took on responsibilities traditionally associated with ritual service, assisting and, in some instances, actively participating in priestly duties for the occasion. This collective spirit of service reflected the essence of Bhaktiβ€”where devotion is expressed through action, humility and dedication to dharma.

From the very beginning, the atmosphere was filled with devotion. The chanting of sacred mantras, the beautifully performed rituals, and the soulful bhajans created an environment of spiritual immersion that continued throughout the day. Every element of the programme reflected the dedication of the priests, musicians, volunteers and organisers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes.

For many devotees, the most powerful moment came during the Mangalya Dharanam, the sacred culmination of the divine wedding ceremony. One attendee shared:

"I was overwhelmed with emotion. Tears rolled down my cheeks without me even realising it. In that precious moment, I felt the divine presence of Lord Rama so stronglyβ€”it was as if I was witnessing my beloved Rama standing before me."

Another family attending for the first time expressed their experience:

"What an amazing Sita Rama Kalyanam! I’m struggling to find the right words. My heartfelt thanks to all the organisers, volunteers, priests, sponsors and everyone working behind the scenes who made this such a grand and uplifting event. The food was delicious, the stalls were well organised and reasonably priced, and the music group was outstandingβ€”the bhajans, explanations and devotional songs were beautiful. We are already waiting for next year’s date."

These heartfelt reflections capture the essence of the dayβ€”a celebration that went far beyond ritual, touching the hearts of all who attended.

This event would not have been possible without the extraordinary commitment of volunteers, priests, musicians, sponsors and supporters. Their collective effort ensured that every aspectβ€”from sacred rituals to prasadam, hospitality, cultural stalls and community engagementβ€”was delivered with devotion and care.

We also extend our sincere gratitude to every devotee who attended and contributed to the spiritual atmosphere through their presence, prayers and participation.

As Solihull Hindu Temple continues its journey towards establishing a permanent home for worship, culture and community service, this celebration stands as a powerful reminder of the unity and devotion within our community. It demonstrated how a thousand-year-old tradition continues to live and breathe in the heart of the West Midlands, bringing generations together in shared faith.

With the blessings of Lord Sri Rama and Mother Sita, we look forward to welcoming everyone again next year for an even more memorable celebration.

Jai Sri Sita Ram! πŸ™

International Yoga Day – When Yoga and the Ramayana Came Together

International Yoga Day on 21 June was celebrated in a truly unique and inspiring way at Solihull Hindu Temple, led by Dr. Madhu Gowda of Shivodham.

What began as a celebration of yoga soon became something much more memorable.

Through an engaging and highly interactive session, Dr. Gowda invited participants to explore the Kalas through discussion and audience participation, weaving each stage into carefully chosen yoga asanas. Rather than simply demonstrating postures, she encouraged everyone to reflect on the deeper values and philosophy behind them, bringing Hindu heritage to life through movement and conversation.

As the session unfolded, it became clear that many of the themes being explored resonated beautifully with the Temple's forthcoming Sita Rama Kalyanam celebrations. Although unplanned, the blend of yoga, Hindu philosophy and cultural heritage created a meaningful bridge between International Yoga Day and one of the most cherished events in the calendar.

Participants didn't just practise yogaβ€”they experienced how our ancient traditions continue to offer guidance, balance and inner peace in modern life. The combination of storytelling, reflection and movement struck a chord with everyone present, with many expressing a desire for these sessions to become a regular part of the Temple's community programme.

The overwhelming response from the community has inspired us to explore how this unique blend of yoga, philosophy and cultural heritage can become an ongoing wellbeing initiative at Solihull Hindu Temple.
